Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
The art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is primarily a grappling martial art consisting mainly of chokes and joint locks. The main goal of a BJJ practitioner is to engange the opponent with the intent of taking the fight to the ground. Once there, techniques are employed to control the opponent, limit their movement and eventually submit the opponent. SWAT MMA and Fitness offers Central Florida residents excellent Brazilian JiuJitsu instruction. The history of Brazilian Jiujitsu began when Mitsuyo “Count Coma” Maeda brought his Judo and Japanese Jujutsu knowledge to Brazil. While there, he met Gestao Gracie who was a well respected Brazilian business man. Gestao helped Maeda establish a school. In return, Maeda agreed to train Gestao’s son Carlos. Carlos then eventually taught the art to Helio and together the two began to modify the techniques to better serve their needs as smaller statured men. Theses changes resulted in what is essentially a new martial art that the two named Gracie JiuJitsu. It is now commonly referred to as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. BJJ gained its prominence when Royce Gracie relied on the art exclusively to win the first UFC. He then went on to win two more Ultimate Fighting Championships tournament titles using only Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Very quickly, word spread that this new ground fighting art was dominating other styles such as Kung Fu, Karate, Ninjitsu and Boxing. Now, every pro fighter and mixed martial artist trains in Brazilian Jiujitsu to learn to not only apply the various submission holds, but to defend them as well. SWAT MMA offers several BJJ classes. Classes are taught by professional MMA fighters and black belt level Jiujitsu tournament champions. Residents are offered some of the best Brazilian Jiujitsu instruction in Central Florida.
